Apple’s CEO Tim Cook becomes the first prominent corporate personal from a fortune 500 company to openly declare that he is gay. Cook opened up about his sexuality in an essay in Bloomberg’s Business week magazine on Thursday which is his first public announcement about his private life.
While explaining why he has kept his sexuality a secret until now Cook also noted that he has always tried to keep his personal life private and never draw attention to it. Cook stated in his essay that “Apple is already one of the most closely watched companies in the world and I like keeping the focus on our products and the incredible things our customers achieve with them.”
Although, Cook’s sexuality has been a long known secret in Silicon Valley this is the first time in 53 years that Cook talked about it in public. “While I have never denied my sexuality, I haven’t publicly acknowledged it either, until now. So let me be clear: I’m proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me.” Wrote Cook in his essay.
Cook also added that “For years, I’ve been open with many people about my sexual orientation. Plenty of colleagues at Apple know I’m gay, and it doesn’t seem to make a difference in the way they treat me.”
Speaking about his life experience as a Gay person Cook also said that he has been through rough times and that experience made him a tough person. Furthermore in his essay Cook spoke about changing environment in America, marriage equality and tough State laws in US that are still bias towards LGBT.
Tim cook received praise from many media houses across the world and organizations who support and work for LGBT rights and marriage equality. But he humbly admitted that he may not be starting a revolution for equality but doing his bit “We pave the sunlit path toward justice together, brick by brick. This is my brick,” he added.
