After launching Touch ID in its latest iPhone 5s Apple is planning to install face detection and integration system in its device. The electronic major has filed a patent for a technique that can unlock an electronic device and perform certain functions after face scan.
The description in the patent says that “The invention, in various embodiments, addresses deficiencies in the prior art by providing systems, methods and devices that enable a personal computing device to detect the presence of at least one user, without the need for receiving active user input information, and control certain device operations depending on whether a user is present.”
As per the application the new technology would be able to identify if the person facing the device is authorized to use the gadget or not. In addition to the security check the technology would be used to determine whether to display personal information like calls history, message and email to the user.
The technology will be able to control the operation of the device and could login and log out of an app after identifying the user. It will allow you add or remove the features (element) that would be controllable with this facial recognition system.
“An element may include a song, a video, a music file, an audio file, a video file, a photograph, a media file, a data file, spreadsheet, document, an application icon, an activation icon, a control button, a data file, and/or contact data.”
The patent also describes that the technique will be able to identify if a registered user is reading, scrolling or typing on the computer and may change the profile setting accordingly. That means different users will be able to login into their separate login accounts in one device without physically entering a user ID and password.
Some Android devices including Samsung smartphone already recognize facial movement and scroll pages, play and pause videos according to the movement.
The patent application says that Apple is planning to enhance and modified those feature to adopt the technology in its devices. Since the Cupertino giant recently bought an Israeli Motion Sensor company “PrimeSense” we believe it won’t be long before we have facial recognition Apple models in hands.
