EBay, the popular online store is requesting users to change their personal information like email, passwords that could have been hacked in a cyber attack. The popular online shopping website stated that non financial data of EBay users has been sacrificed in a hack that took place sometime between Feb-March 2014.
EBay regrets any inconvenience or concern that this password reset may cause our customers. We know our customers trust us with their information and we take seriously our commitment to maintain a safe and trusted global market. Reads a statement by Ebay Inc
The information that could have been compromised in the cyber attack includes users name and personal information like date of birth, encrypted password, physical address and login email. Luckily, so far EBay has not reported any case of unauthorized access to user’s credit card or other financial details.
According to EBay the hack was first identified about two weeks ago and later some solid forensics supported that EBay database has been compromised. It seems that hackers compromised some small number of employee credentials to get inside EBay’s corporate server and got hold of non financial information of users.
EBay also said that” it has no evidence of Unauthorized access or compromise to personal or financial information for PayPal users. PayPal data is stored separately on a secure network and all PayPal financial information in encrypted. “
The company has already started sending alert emails and messages to EBay users urging to change their passwords. As always if you use same password for multiple accounts remember to change your password on other online platform as well to stay safe from cyber attack.
