If you think what you do on your social network sites is between you and your friends then you will have to give it one more thought! Though you might have tight security settings for your Facebook account, all your details could be under the government scanner.
In a shocking revelation by Facebook in its recent government transparency report, Indian government comes second after the United States for making most number of requests for Facebook user data. According to the transparency initiative by Facebook, Indian government has made whopping 4,114 user data requests to Facebook while the US has inquired for over 11, 000 accounts in last six months.
The astonishing number clearly shows how vigorously Indian government is watching the activities on social media. Gone are the days when people used to log in to social media sites to just socializing and meeting new people . The space, with time, has become more of a place where issues are raised and solutions are discussed. Sometimes the same platform could be used for criminal activity or foul practice. So governments across the world are turning to social networks for gathering information and keeping an eye on any suspicious activities.
In a result social networks have to compromise the privacy of their users that has become a growing concern for such websites. In its effort to involve the social network users in this ongoing debate Facebook has shared the states of all 74 countries which have requested user’s details from Facebook between Jan-June this year.
