It’s official now that Samsung is not going to roll out Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade for its older model Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S3 Mini. Sammobile says that the Korean giant confirmed in a letter that the latest Android is not going to be available for the Galaxy S 3 series.
As per Samsung’s response to Sammobile both Galaxy S 3 and Galaxy S3 mini are not capable of running Android 4.4 KitKAt because their 1 GB RAM is not sufficient to run the latest Android in a proper manner.
Sammobile posted the Offcial statement by Samsung on the matter
“ In Order to facilitate an effective upgrade on Google Platform, various hardware performances such as the memory(RAM, Rom, etc), multi-tasking capabilities and display must meet certain technical expectations.
The Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S 3 Mini 3 G versions come equipped with 1 GB RAM, which does not allow them to effectively support the platform upgrade. As a result of the Glaxy S3 and S3 mini 3G versions hardware limitation, they cannot effectively support the platform upgrade while continuing to provide the best consumer experience.
Samsung has decided not-to roll out the KitKat upgrade to Galaxy S3 and S3 mini 3G versions, and the Kitkat upgrade will be available to the Galaxy S3 LTE versions as the device’s 2 GB RAM is enough to support the platform upgrade.”
As it appears it all comes down to the RAM which is kind of an irony as Android 4.4 KiKat is said to be an OS designed to bring more power to low RAM devices.
One may ask that many new smartphones with 1 GB RAM and even 512 MB RAM run on Android so why can’t Galaxy S 3 ?The problem with Galaxy S 3 or rather with most older flagship android is that their 1 GB RAM is already occupied with bulky UI and local apps.
Sadly this means that Android 4.3 is the last upgrade for Galaxy S 3 and Galaxy S3 Mini 3G versions and this news is likely to affected prices of both models.
