If you are one of the WhatsApp users who are waiting impatiently for the new voice calling feature, you got to beware. Though WhatsApp’s voice calling option is in testing and has been rolled out to some users already, there is a spam doing rounds on the instant massing app that can lure you into downloading a malware by inviting you to try out voice calling.
Techloon learnt about it from an awareness message being circulated on WhatsApp that talks about the website all the WhatsApp users should beware of.
Many users are getting an invitation that asks them to try the new voice calling feature by clicking on an embedded link. The link simply takes you to a survey page where it asks you to send invites to 10 of your WhatsApp contacts in order to ‘Continue’ with the survey.
Once the invitations are sent and you click on the ‘Continue’ button, the next step is to download different apps, watch some adverts and at the end you get no voice calling feature.
By the looks of it this entire thing looks just an effort to make a quick buck cashing on the desperation of WhatsApp users to get the voice calling feature as the craving has picked up after the news of the service being available to limited users.
However, downloading the apps and software from unreliable sources may lead to making a clear way for malware to enter your device. So we suggest you that if you get any invite for WhatsApp calling please be refrained from it.
When WhatsApp is really going to roll out the voice calling feature, it will definitely update the app version and you will be asked to download and updated the app as whole.
When Techloon tried to get into more details about this malicious website, we learnt that the webpage has now been pulled down with a 404 error message appearing on the face of it.
