Android may be the king of low budget smartphones but Firefox is hoping to create a new super low price smartphone market with its Rs 1500 Mozilla smartphone that runs on Mozilla OS. Firefox has joined hands with Desi mobile makers Intex and Spice to bring its $25 smartphone in the country.
Firefox first announced his low cost $25 smartphone at the Mobile World conference in Barcelona early this year. Due to its budget friendly cost the Mozilla smartphone may not look anything like today’s budget android that start from above 5,000 mark but it will still be a functioning smartphone. With its low budget smartphone Firefox is exploring a new territory that can cater a huge world population which still rely on feature phones.
The Mozilla smartphone will be able to run basic applications and have comparatively small screen size of about 3 or 3.5 inch because of the strength of the CPU. It will overambitious to expect such cheap phone to support LTE, but the Mozzila $25 baby may support WCDMA and EDGE.
Although the CPU will offer other basic connectivity features like WiFi, Bluetooth and FM Radio it will also have a primary camera.
If Firefox is going to duplicate its Mozilla model ZTE Open II with Indian partners Intex and Spice we can also expect the smartphone to feature 3.5 inch screen with 480X230 WVGA display. To cut the cost of hardware Mozila has a partnered with Chinese chipset maker Speardtrum communication that will design budget hardware for the device. The smartphone may also sport 3 megapixels primary camera and a decent size battery (supposedly 1150 mAh like ZTE Open II).
A basic feature smartphone may not sound like much but there is a huge untapped market for such budget phone especially since no one has explored the under 5,000 segment yet. If Firefox can deliver some basic feature and an intuitive design in its Rs 1500 smartphone we may a see a huge chunk of Indian feature phone users making a switch to a Mozilla smartphone without paying a fortune for it.
