Nokia Mobile the name that was once considered a synonym to mobiles is soon going to be renamed as Microsoft Mobile. As the software giant Microsoft prepares to take full charge of Nokia business this week a leaked email suggest that it has already changed the name of its mobile unit as Microsoft Mobile.
According to Nokia Power User the Nokia Oyj is going to be renamed as Microsoft Oy after Microsoft completes the last few formalities on 25 April to take full charge of Nokia business.
An alleged email send by Microsoft to its supplier reads “Please note that upon the close of the transaction between Microsoft and Nokia, the name of Nokia Corporation/Nokia Oyj will change to Microsoft Mobile Oy. Microsoft Mobile Oy is the legal entity name that should be used for VAT IDs and for the issuance of invoices.”
However the message in the above email clearly state that Microsoft will give Nokia mobile business its own name after the takeover it seem like an aggressive move. Undoubtedly, Microsoft is a big brand that could boost the value to any product but similarly the name Nokia has been associated with mobiles for as long as the history of mobile.
Does this mean it is the end of Nokia we all know? Well yeas and no. Last September when Microsoft sealed the deal with Nokia for $7.2 billion it bought a huge chunk of Nokia Mobile business that look into the designs, research and manufacturing of smartphones.
Although, some divisions which were not part of the deal like Here Maps division and the team working on network tools will retain Nokia name. As per the agreement Microsoft has the right to use Nokia’s name for next 10 years but the contract also allows other business of Nokia to keep the same name.
Sadly this means that we may never see the name “Nokia Mobiles” on bill boards, mobiles and banners again but the name Nokia will live on.
