The rumor clouds were floating over Nokia for considering a switch from Windows Phone to Android in late 2014 before Microsoft bought the mobile company for 7.2 billion dollars. Microsoft’s aggressive approach surprised many technology critics but now the billions dollar deal make sense when we know that Nokia Android phone could have been a reality.
According to a blog by New York Times Nokia was secretly testing Google’s Android operating system on their phones before they struck the business deal with Microsoft. Nokia, Once a mobile tycoon signed an agreement with Microsoft in 2011 to use their phone operating system Windows Phone for Nokia Models until 2014.
However, the deal did not worked out well for Nokia as they faced criticism from many parts of the world to have a less competitive operating system. Despite Nokia’s efforts to produce world class smartphone the company saw a drastic decline in their sales in last 2 years.
Since Android phones like Samsung Sony, LG and HTC started dominating the smartphone market in some developing countries it was a no-brainer for Nokia to switch their loyalty to Google. However, Microsoft took a smart move and bought the struggling Nokia before their contract with the mobile company expires in late 2014. The software giant secured the future of its phone operating system by buying the largest selling Windows mobile ‘Nokia’ but we can’t stop wondering what if Nokia would have ended with Android?
